Southpaw Jake Gyllenhaal, Rachel McAdams Directed by Antoine Fuqua

Jake Gyllenhaal steps into the hoop on this sentimental sweet-technological know-how melodrama

Jake Gyllenhaal is on a roll. Onscreen in Nightcrawler, Enemy and Prisoners, and onstage in Constellations, Little keep of Horrors and If there may be i have never observed It but, he indicates the form of versatility and commitment that need to have won him prizes. The awards didn't materialize, but it is only a count of time. Maybe it is going to be for Southpaw, a retro, in-your-face combat drama that dribbles into sappiness. Plenty, though some distance from all, is redeemed via Gyllenhaal's virtuoso overall performance. The actor, 34, educated for four months and gained 15 kilos of muscle to play mild-heavyweight champ Billy hope. But the externals — scars, tattoos and slurred voice — do not begin to indicate the emotional depths Gyllenhaal brings to the part of a bruiser on the ropes.

Billy is at the pinnacle of his game, however regular jabs have left him punchy. His spouse, Maureen (Rachel McAdams), desires him to sluggish down and enjoy their eleven-yr-antique daughter, Leila (a feisty Oona Laurence). Director Antoine Fuqua (training Day, The Equalizer), operating from an overcooked screenplay by using Kurt Sutter (Sons of Anarchy), is aware of he is not in the equal ring with Raging Bull, Rocky, Million dollar infant and The Fighter, although the script unblushingly mooches from every of them. Still, Fuqua shuffles the equipment of the genre with true flair. As tragedy lands Billy inside the pits of desperation, poverty and child-custody battles, Fuqua shifts focus from Billy's crooked agent (Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson) to a trainer-savior, Tick Wills (the expert forest Whitaker), who teaches Billy a brand new fighting style that does not involve preventing punches together with his head.

The powerful boxing scenes, vividly shot from Madison square lawn to Vegas via Mauro Fiore and edited by using John Refoua, assist distract from the daddy-daughter scenes that outdo The Champ (the Wallace Beery original and the Jon Voight remake) for gooey sentiment. Amazingly, Gyllenhaal never cheats on his character's feel of dignity. Towards the chances, he maintains you in Billy's nook. It is a champ.
